Odlad frukt (2020) in English
On November 5th 2020, our rendition of “Odlad frukt” (“Cultivated Fruit”), after a short story by Sweden’s most renowned playwright August Strindberg, premiered in Malmö. It’s a collaboration between Theatron and the Stockholm playhouse Strindberg’s Intimate Theatre.
The result is a musical and thought-provoking journey that presents the audience with new perspectives on Strindberg’s language, as well as migration.
“Cultivated Fruit” takes place in the 1460s. It is the story of Sven Ulvfot, a previously wealthy young man who suddenly realises he doesn’t have a penny to his name, and is forced on a journey to find ways to make a living. In our interpretation, we connect Sten’s story to our own life stories and provide our own perspectives. Why are there so many migrants today? What do their experiences tell us about the world?
Are we, just like Sten, about to lose what we have because of how we live?
The performance features Theatron’s Suzanna Santrac and Zeljko Santrac, as well as an international guest – the Jordanian singer and multi-instrumentalist Yahia Najem. Together, the trio carries with them different experiences of departure and immigration; including moving to a new country where the language is unfamiliar, and the range of possibilities significantly narrower.
“Cultivated Fruit” will be given as a so-called “picnic performance”, where the audience is encouraged to bring their own picnic, and enjoy it during the play!
The play is directed by Anna Pettersson, and the set design is created by Max Mitle.
